Drinking Water for Bay Staters at Risk from Nuclear Power Plants

MASSPIRG Education Fund and the Environment Massachusetts Research and Policy Center representatives  will be joined by local advocates and public health experts near the Pilgrim nuclear power plant  to release a new report which includes data on how the plant is a threat to the drinking water for the Commonwealth.

Treasured Pond Contaminated With Toxic Pollution

One of Massachusetts most treasured waterways is contaminated with mercury, according to a new report from Environment Massachusetts.  The report found 124 waterways in the state that have advisories for mercury. The advisories instruct citizens to limit their consumption of certain fish in Massachusetts' waterways due to mercury contamination.

Among the waterways under advisory is Walden Pond, considered by many to be the birthplace of the conservation movement.

Report finds 15 percent drop in beach closings in Massachusetts

A new report by the National Resources Defense Council gives reason for optimism about the quality of beaches in Massachuetts.

 “Testing The Waters: A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches,” found a 15 percent drop in beach closings fin 2010 and that projects such as the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s opening of a recent storage tunnel  in South Boston are contributing to the improvement.

[Boston, MA]— Streams and wetlands in Massachusetts are at risk of increased pollution, according to a report released today by Environment Massachusetts, Courting Disaster: How the Supreme Court Has Broken the Clean Water Act and Why Congress Must Fix It. One case study highlighted in this report is a wetland area around Buzzards Bay that is at risk of loosing Clean Water Act protections. The report also provides 30 case studies demonstrating how the federal Clean Water Act is broken and calling on Representative Capuano to fix it.

Alewife Reservation Leading the Way in Clean Water: Federal Legislation Would Extend Protections to All Wetlands

Cambridge, MA - In 1972, the Clean Water Act was passed in a historic promise to make all of our lakes and rivers safe for fishing and swimming by 1985. Today, 38 years later, our waters still lack the protections they need: nearly half the waters in the U.S. are considered too polluted to be safe.

A bill in Congress would strengthen the Clean Water Act to make good on its promise. “We need clean water now, and we need the federal government to act to protect our health and our environment” said Eleanor Fort, Preservation Associate for Environment Massachusetts.
