Every Massachusetts County Hit By At Least One Recent Weather Disaster; New Report Says Global Warming to Bring More Extreme Weather

After a year that saw many parts of the country hit by scorching heat, devastating wildfires, severe storms and record flooding, a new Environment Massachusetts report documents how global warming could lead to certain extreme weather events becoming even more common or more severe in the future.  The report found that, already, every Massachusetts county has been hit by at least one federally declared weather-related disaster since 2006.

New Report Shows Walden Pond Contaminated by Toxic Mercury Pollution

124 waterways in Massachusetts have advisories for mercury pollution, according to the latest government data outlined in a new report from Environment Massachusetts.   These advisories instruct citizens to limit their consumption of certain fish in Massachusetts’ waterways due to mercury contamination. Among the waterways under advisory is Walden Pond, considered by many to be the birthplace of the conservation movement.

Boston Named 3rd Smoggiest Metropolitan Area in the State.

Today Environment Massachusetts released a new report showing that the Boston area ranks as the 3rd smoggiest metropolitan area in the state.  Smog is a harmful air pollutant that leads to asthma attacks and exacerbates respiratory illnesses, especially among children and the elderly. The new report, Danger in the Air: Unhealthy Air Days in 2010 and 2011 shows that in total, residents in the Boston area were exposed to air quality that made it dangerous to breathe on 3 days last year.  Also, this summer alone, residents in the Boston area have already been alerted to unhealthy air on 8 days.

Organizations say Scott Brown's votes"endanger public health"

A broad coalition of national, regional and Massachusetts advocacy groups is taking Senator Scott Brown to task for backing legislation that would "severely endanger public health." On April 6th, Brown voted in support of a proposal that would have blocked the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from reducing carbon pollution and other greenhouse gases.

Obama Administration Moves to Protect Forests

Boston – Today, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack issued an interim directive protecting pristine forests from new logging and drilling. The directive requires his personal approval for any new logging, drilling, or roadbuilding in nearly 50 million acres of our most pristine national forests.   The measure does not protect roadless areas in Idaho.

Environmental Bond Clears the House

Boston- Late last night the Environmental Bond (now bill H5005) was passed by the House. During his speech introducing the bill, Representative Frank Smizik, House Chair of the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture, expressed his appreciation to the Coalition for the Environmental Bond, a coalition of over 260 organizations and businesses across the state, including Environment Massachusetts, that have been working for the bill's passage.

PATRICK-MURRAY BUDGET TO RECOMMEND MORE THAN $100 MILLION FOR PARKS AGENCY

BOSTON – Friday, January 18, 2008 – Governor Deval Patrick is proposing funding of $100.6 million for the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) in his budget for Fiscal Year 2009 – an increase of $7.7 million, or 8.3 percent, from FY 2008, and $16.7 million, or 20 percent, from FY 2007.
