Regional Climate Action

Regional climate program significantly cutting global warming pollution

Acting locally while thinking globally is reducing our contribution to pollution that’s warming the planet and changing our climate.

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a partnership of nine states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, produced 19.7 percent less carbon pollution in the first six months of 2019 than in 2018, according to an analysis released Sept. 6. RGGI caps carbon emissions from power plants, makes the plants pay for their pollution, and invests the money in clean energy.

“While the federal government is rolling back our nation’s best climate-mitigation programs, these governors are making the environment safer and healthier for their constituents,” said Andrea McGimsey, senior director of our national network’s Global Warming Solutions campaign. “We need this kind of leadership at all levels of government and society to address the most significant challenge of our time.”

The nine states participating in RGGI are Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. New Jersey is rejoining the compact, and Virginia is in the process of joining.
