Boston – Mayors from every state, including Massachusetts, are embracing a vision for more solar energy in their communities, as stated in a letter released today by Environment Massachusetts Research & Policy Center. More than 200 “Mayors for Solar Energy” represent cities and towns from Florida to Alaska, California to Maine, including four mayors in Massachusetts.

“While our federal government is promoting 19th-century dirty energy policies, local governments are leading America’s transition to clean energy,” says Ben Hellerstein, State Director for Environment Massachusetts Research & Policy Center. “Mayors across the state and country are rising to the challenge: thinking bigger, acting smarter, and tapping the sun for more power.”

The mayors who signed the letter represent a diverse group of municipalities, ranging from small towns to major cities. Of the signers, 25 are Republicans.

Since the initial release of the letter in December 2017, the number of signers has more than tripled. Environment Massachusetts Research & Policy Center is distributing resources and hosting trainings to help city officials adopt more renewable energy.

“Mayors know that the residents and businesses in their communities are ready for clean energy,” said Hellerstein. “Solar is helping cities and towns build a brighter future.”
